Segments

Segmentation is the method of grouping users with similar characteristics or behaviors from your entire user base. In AlgorithmX, segments are the core of personalized marketing. Rather than sending the same message to everyone, our dynamic segmentation engine evaluates user data in real-time to ensure you always send the right message to the right person.

1. Prerequisites

Before creating segments, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • Data Synchronization: The AlgorithmX integration must be fully completed on your website, and event tracking must be actively collecting data.
  • Defined Custom Attributes: If you plan to segment by custom data (like 'Loyalty Tier'), ensure those fields exist in your Contacts database.
  • Note: Segmentation relies entirely on tracked user data. If no data is being collected, segments cannot be evaluated.

2. Core Concepts

To build accurate, data-driven audiences, it is important to understand these foundational concepts:

User Attributes vs. Events

  • User Attributes: Properties related to a user profile, such as email address, country, device permissions, or subscription status. AlgorithmX evaluates segments using the latest available value. (e.g., Users whose last known country is UAE).
  • Events & Event Attributes: Actions performed by users (e.g., page views, add-to-cart). Each event can include details called event attributes (e.g., product category, price). Events can occur multiple times. (e.g., Users who placed at least 3 orders in the last 90 days in the sportswear category).

Dynamic vs. Static Segments

  • Dynamic Segments: Automatically update based on defined rules. AlgorithmX continuously evaluates incoming data, adding or removing users without manual maintenance.
  • Static Segments: Fixed audiences created by manually importing user data. Useful for one-time external campaigns. (Covered fully in Contacts).

3. Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Access the Segments Dashboard

Navigate to AUDIENCE > Segment. Here, you will see a list of all active dynamic segments.

Step 2: Define Rules using the Logic Panel

Click Create Segment to open the visual Drag-and-Drop rule builder.

The left side of the panel contains nodes that you can drag into the main canvas:

  1. Root Node: The starting point of your segment tree.
  2. Group Node: Groups multiple nodes together using logical AND or OR operators.
  3. General: Use Keyword Search nodes to segment users based on specific search terms they used.
  4. Orders: Segment based on purchase history (order amount, quantity, specific products).
  5. Cart: Segment based on basket data (abandoned items, cart total, specific categories added).

Step 3: Save and Populate

After organizing your nodes and setting the exact conditions (by double-clicking each node), click Save. The engine will immediately query your database and populate the segment.

4. Configuration Reference

| Operator/Node | Type | Description / Best Practice | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | AND Operator | Logic | Narrows down the audience. Users must meet all conditions inside the group. | | OR Operator | Logic | Expands the audience. Users must meet at least one condition in the group. | | Cart Node | Behavioral | Tracks basket activity. Great for identifying high-intent shoppers. | | Orders Node | Behavioral | Tracks historical purchases. Use it to identify VIPs (high quantity/amount). |

Predefined Segments

AlgorithmX comes with ready-to-use audience groups based on common lifecycle events:

  • Cart Abandonment: Users who added products to the cart but did not complete the purchase within a defined time window.
  • User Sign-up: Users who recently registered or created an account.

5. Best Practices & Troubleshooting

Best Practices

  • Hyper-Personalization: Don't rely on broad segments like "All Users". Build nested segments (e.g., "Users who abandoned cart AND searched for 'Android mobile'").
  • Monitor Sizes: Monitor changes in segment size in real time to understand engagement and behavior patterns.

Troubleshooting

[!CAUTION] Segment Size is 0? If a segment returns 0 users, double-check your AND operators. Often, conflicting rules (e.g., "Device is iOS" AND "Device is Android" for a single session) will yield zero results. Change the Group Node to OR.
